Microstructure
One of the primary applications of the macro-microscopic modeling of solidification is the prediction of micro structural features. In SUTCASTÂ R. 9.1, microstructure of cast aluminum parts can be predicted based on simulation results. The trend of increasing the grain size with increasing distances from the chill or decreasing cooling rates is correctly predicted.

A number of factors define the metallurgical structure in aluminum castings. Of primary importance are dendrite cell sizes or dendrite arm spacing. The foundry man can control the fineness of dendrite structure by controlling the rate of solidification.
A fine, equiaxed grain structure is normally desired in aluminum casting. The type and size of grain formed can be determined by SUTCASTÂ software.
The grain size of cast structures obtained by sectioning the casting itself, polishing, and etching is also determined under magnification. Determinations are usually comparative and judgmental, but quantitative grain size measurement by SUTCASTÂ software is also practiced.
